I teach Russian/Soviet, East-European cultural history, comparative literature, and film at the University of Toronto. I have been working in the past years (directing, camera, and editing) on several film projects on Russian and Soviet themes, including the history of the Soviet Far East and Soviet film distribution and exhibition. Currently I am working on three documentaries: a film on social issues in present-day Kyrgyzstan; a film capturing echoes (life stories and architectural elements) in the city of Harbin (China); and (together with Susan Solomon) a film attempting to reconstruct the many lives of Alexander Rubakin, a Soviet public-health go-between, who lived and worked in France, Switzerland, the United States and Russia.
