Georg is an elderly and solitary man whose only contact with the world is via the intermittent visits of Sebastian, a call-boy. When they meet, in addition to the sex, they also share moments of companionship, tenderness, and laughter at the amusing tales Sebastian recounts.
This relationship is the centre of the old man’s life: he tapes their conversations to listen to when alone again. Georg waits impatiently for Sebastian’s visits, and helps out his occasional companion by paying him over the odds and giving him meals. One evening, the boy asks if he can stay the night…
In choosing an enclosed space as setting for the ambiguous relationship between Georg and Sebastian and filming his actors extremely close-up – their muscles, veins, wrinkles, director Stefan Westerwelle takes us into the heart of their painful and tortured intimacy.
Rigorously filmed, eschewing all pathos, the magnificent chiaroscuro video images create via a myriad cruel and poetic touches a detailed depiction of the emotional life of this old man yearning for human contact.
