  • Synopsis:

For over 4 billion years, life has struggled to survive. We are surrounded today by resilient veterans in this ancient war - creatures descended from long lines of successful ancestors that survived to bred and to continue their line. The rule of life is that ancestral lineages continue. The Survivors investigates why some dynasties and even species go extinct, and what makes a good survivor in the long term. To stay alive for one lifetime is challenging, but to continue generation after generation takes something special. Giant meteors, huge climatic changes, and cataclysmic volcanic activity have repeatedly ravaged Earth. These disasters have led to a series of mass extinctions that wiped out the vas majority of species. More species have been driven to extinction by rival animals. Yet some lineages dodge extinction again and again. What's Their secret? This concluding episode looks at dinosaurs, dodos, and a host of living creatures - both thriving and on the verge of extinction - to find out why some species may be doomed, and what it takes to survive the test of time. The answers give us a glimpse of how life might look on Earth in the future, and whether humans have what it takes to survive the next great threat of extinction.(more)
