Wei-Lun Yang was a senior in high school in Taipei city. He spent most of his time at school, the cram school, his home or on the way between two of any abovementioned destinations. The only time for him to catch his breath was the break in an internet café when he had free time between school and the cram school. He was not serious about his tests, and not thinking much about his future.
Yang Zhang was the best friend and classmate of Wei-Lun since middle school. He was not only interested in dancing but also dreaming to become a professional dancer one day, but he never told anything to Wei-Lun. He was going to study dancing performance overseas after this summer. The cram school was the last opportunity to spend time with Wei-Lun.
Wei-Lun had a crush on Ruo-Ying Yin, who graduated from the same high school. She failed the entrance exam last year and her father’s high expectation. Therefore, she went to the cram school to study and retake the exam this year. All her friends went away to college.
And the story began in a summer evening…
Wei-Lun was late to the cram school, again! This was not the first time because he played online games in the internet café. He rushed into the stairway and he saw the teacher happed to be yelling at Ruo-Ying, who Wei-Lun secretly admired.
Yang was late, too, because he was buying comic books. The teacher confronted him with his laziness and tardiness. The confrontation eventually turned to a verbal conflict between Yang and the teacher. At last, Wei-Lun and Zhang Yang ran away and skipped the class.
They came to Old City Gate, their secret place. Wei-Lun could not stop thinking about Ruo-Ying all evening. However, Yang did not notice Wei-Lun’s disturbed feelings because he wanted to tell Wei-Lun something important.
Yang said, “I am going… to study dance… in England.”
Just when the summer just gets started, they now have to leave each other. The routine classes and tests will finish at the end of this summer, and so will their memorable adolescent life. .
Before the summer starts, they are escaping from the city, learning how to say goodbye, and growing up before they even realize…(more)
