Overnight, a Rose is a touching drama that shows how love overcomes lies. This is a story about Xiao Mei (14) and her grandmother (48) whose relationship is based on lies. The story takes place in a small town in Taiwan, in the present. Mei is a rebellious and sullen teenager. Her name means Rose in Chinese. Her mother was a single parent who loved roses and named her daughter after her favorite flower, Mei. Friends and neighbors usually call her Little Rose (Xiao Mei). Xiao Mei grew up in this broken family and she is easily influenced by her friends. She is always smoking, lying and behaving badly. She is also a shoplifter and loves to steal cosmetics in the malls. Deep inside, she wants to get attention from people. Xiao Mei’s room is a mess like her emotions. The only thing that is kept well groomed is the potted roses her mother loved. The potted roses are the only connection between her mother and Mei, and she imagines her mother as a lovely and kind person. The roses are her mother.
Xiao Mei lives with her grandmother, a stubborn, unyielding, and immature person. She always dresses up nicely when she hangs out with friends and loves gambling and playing MahJong. She loves her grandchild very much but can’t show it. Mei hates her grandmother and thinks she is self-absorbed, gossipy and immature. Because she is not her MOTHER, Mei feels her grandmother doesn’t have the right to tell her what to do, so they always fight. Mei hurts her grandmother’s feelings because she does not realize her grandmother is trying to protect her by not telling the truth, that Mei’s mother abandoned her. Mei searches for love according to her high expectations of what love ‘should be’ in contrast to the immature love that she feels in all her grandmother can give her. (more)
