    • Run time: 12 minutes
    • Country of origin: Canada, South Africa
  • Genre:
    Television, Children, Animation - Games
  • Synopsis:

Magic Cellar is the first animated series based on African culture. The series marks the first time Africa’s children see themselves reflected in an animated series.
The series celebrates Africa’s culture and traditions, while promoting reading as exciting and adventurous. The stories are based on African folktales, partially collected from interviews conducted with elders in villages across South Africa. Each episode is broken up into three sections: a brief introduction and set-up; the African story; and a wrap-up with the lessons learnt. Each episode is a self-contained, animated short.
Magic Cellar is unique as it is:

    -Africa’s first 3D animated series.
-The first animated series based on African culture.
-The first vehicle to showcase African culture to children around the world.
-A television series that preserves African folktales, some of which are being lost as the tradition of oral story-telling diminishes.
    - A series featuring a multi-cultural cast of characters, with the principal character being a young African girl.
-Captures southern Africa’s stunning vistas and landscapes.
-Produced with meticulous care to authenticity.

Commissioned by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the animated series is a co-production between the SABC, Morula Pictures of Johannesburg, South Africa and Chocolate Moose Media Inc. of Ottawa, Canada. Multi-award winning director and producer Firdaus Kharas of Canada is the Director and Executive Producer of Magic Cellar.
