Festival Description:

The largest of its kind in Asia, Taiwan's annual Women Make Waves (WMW) Film and Video Festival screens around 100 films by international and local female directors, with themes including women's health and body, queer issues, animation and experimental films. Recently, a new section was added that allows films with women-oriented issues that are directed by men to be screened. WMW aims to celebrate the achievements of outstanding female talents, to explore different aspects of women’s lives as well as to promote equality and rights of all genders. By including a wide range of genres, issues, and representation of women, the Festival seeks to present women directors’ survival wisdom and resisting power into a creative.

Women Make Waves Film Festival was born in 1993, when Taiwan was going through a decade of democratization and rapid change. After the lifting of Marshal Law in 1987, social forces that had long been suppressed began to break out, including feminist discourses and actions. The first half of the nineties can be defined as the years when Taiwanese people from all walks of life released a tremendous amount of energy into sensitive social issues such environmental protection, labor rights, educational reform, media reform, parliamentary reform and gender equality. This was the age of political awakening and people power.

It is therefore no surprise that Women Make Waves Film Festival came into being with the help of female filmmakers and Women’s Awakening-a pioneer women’s movement organization. The “waves” these women wished to make, along with other “waves” dashing to the shores of many social movement battlegrounds, have helped shape the diverse and highly democratized society of Taiwan today.

Submission to the Festival is open for feature films, documentaries, animation, short films and innovative visual productions for digital media. There is no entry fee
