The Solothurn Film Festival has long been an integral part of the history of Swiss film and socio-political issues. While the program focuses on 'Works' with current films and videos from all four linguistic regions, there are also 'Special Programs' which deal with works from film schools and from abroad, television and co-productions, as well as a retrospective of a particular individual in film industry. In addition, various 'Events', which are associated with institutes and professional organisations, provide the opportunity for discussions concerning the politics of and pending issues in the world of film.
Like no other form of artistic expression, contemporary film reflects the mood of a society. The Solothurn Film Festival portrays the Swiss film production and is therefore at the center of interest of both the media and a broad public. Filmmaking is always a country’s most important cultural export, too. Being a prominent public and media event, the Solothurn Film Festival encourages the development of Swiss film culture by pursuing an active information policy and by offering its help in creating international contacts.
Over the course of the years, the Solothurn Film Festival has established itself as the most important meeting place for Swiss filmmakers, the media and the public. Contacts are made, opinions formed and the basis for new projects is laid here. The increasing number of box office admissions bear witness to continuing interest in "internal affairs."
