  • Festival Description:

    Sofia International Film Festival (Sofia IFF) seeks to promote significant and innovative works in contemporary world cinema for local audience and regional (Bulgarian and Balkan) cinema to an international audience, as well as to encourage cooperation between local and international filmmakers. The programme of the 15th Sofia IFF includes the following sections:

    - International Feature Film Competition (Grand Prix for First or Second Film)

    - The Big Five

    - Cinema Today – The Masters

    - Cinema Tomorrow - Discoveries

    - Special Screenings

    - New Bulgarian Cinema (Kodak Award for Best Bulgarian Feature)

    - Bulgarian Short Films (Jameson Short Film Award for Best Bulgarian Short)

    - Balkan Competition (No Man’s Land Award)

    - Documentary Programme

    - Short Film Programme

    - Tributes and Retrospectives

    - Operation Kino

    Filmmakers will be honored with the following awards:

    GRAND PRIX- For best film in the International Competition (diploma and a prize of 5000 Euro)

    SPECIAL JURY AWARD- For film in the International Competition (diploma)

    AWARD FOR BEST DIRECTOR PROVIDED BY CADILLAC- For film in the International Competition (diploma and a prize of 1000 Euro)

    KODAK AWARD FOR BEST BULGARIAN FEATURE FILM- diploma, a trophy, film negative and laboratory services amounted of 4000 USD, provided by Kodak

    JAMESON SHORT FILM AWARD FOR BEST BULGARIAN SHORT FILM- a trophy and a prize of 6000 Euro, provided by Jameson

    AUDIENCE AWARD

    NO MAN’S LAND AWARD FOR BEST BALKAN FILM- Diploma and a box of No Man’s Land wine, provided by Damianitza, 7 days half board stay for two in Istria, Croatia, during the Motovun Festival, provided by Istria Tourist Board

  • GRAND PRIX For best film in the International Competition

    SOFIA FILM FESTIVAL GRAND PRIX FOR BEST FILM in the international competition goes to "THE MERMAID" (Rusia) directed by ANNA MElIKYAN .

    The award is given for its achievements in art direction, cinematography, decoupage production, acting and it’s play for energy and invention.

    The award includes a diploma and EUR 5000

    SPECIAL JURY AWARD

    For film in the International Competition (diploma)

    THE SPECIAL MENTION AWARD goes to “Bird can’t fly” (The Netherlands- South Africa- UK) directed by THREES ANNA for creating a unique and magical world the jury awards a Special Mention to the “Bird can’t fly”.

    AWARD FOR BEST DIRECTOR PROVIDED BY CADILLAC

    For film in the International Competition (diploma and a prize of 1000 Euro)

    THE CADILAC AWARD FOR BEST DIRECTING goes to director Stefan Arsenijevic for his film “LOVE AND OTHER CRIMES”( Serbia-Germany-Austria-Slovenia) for the humanity and lyricism of his style.

    KODAK AWARD FOR BEST BULGARIAN FEATURE FILM

    (diploma, a trophy, film negative and laboratory services amounted of 4000 USD, provided by Kodak)


    JAMESON SHORT FILM AWARD FOR BEST BULGARIAN SHORT FILM

    THE JAMESON AWARD FOR A BULGARIAN SHORT FILM goes to "Family Therapy" directed by PETAR VALCHANOV. Of all the short films that jury saw they narrowed the choice down to three films. They very much liked “The Third Floor” and “The go – Between”, but the winner, for its combination of dark humor and dramatic intensity is “Family Therapy.”

    The award consists of a diploma, a statuette and EUR 6000 provided by JAMESON Irish Whiskey.

    AUDIENCE AWARD

    Audience award goes to "THE WORLD IS BIG AND SALVATION LURKS AROUND THE CORNER" directed by Stephan Komandarev

    NO MAN’S LAND AWARD FOR BEST BALKAN FILM

    THE BEST BALKAN FILM AWARD NO MAN’S LAND is presented by the Bulgarian Film Critics’ Guild to “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days” directed by Cristian Mungiu.

    The award is a diploma and a box of No Man’s Land.

    FIPRESCI AWARD

    The Jury of FIPRESSI consisting of
    Leo Soesanto - ( France)
    Kerem Akca – ( Turkey)
    Antonia Kovacheva – ( Bulgaria) handed out its award to
    film "SEAMSTRESSES" (Bulgaria) and director LUDMIL TODOROV.

    The award is given because the film is a honest and refreshing story about broken dreams and beauty of hope in modern Bulgaria, filmed in a modern Bulgaria, filmed in a classical neat way.

    No Man's Land Award For Best Balkan Film: “Investigation”
