SSFF has also been known for its international activities such as screenings in Singapore, Myanmar, Mexico City and at the historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. In 2004, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences accredited SSFF as an official qualifier of short films for nomination to the annual Academy Awards. The winner of Short Shorts' grand prix is eligible to receive an Academy Award nomination.

SSFF accepts films that are under 25 minutes and considers films in four categories:
Japan, Asia International, International and STOP! Global Warming. Eligibility for
each category will be determined by the festival based on the following criteria:
Director’s nationality, film location, language of the film, main actors nationality
    and source of funding.
