San Sebastian Horror and Fantasy Festival is among the horror and fantasy film world's most famous annual events. Over more than two decades the Festival has presented film premieres of the leading filmmakers in the genre. Its guests have included: Robert Englund, Santiago Segura, Peter Jackson, Guillermo del Toro, Jess Franco, Tsukamoto and many others.

In 2009 San Sebastian celebrated the work of H. R. Giger, the versatile Swiss artist (Chur, 1940) and creator of his own imaginary, a powerful and captivating world, plagued with cyborgs, monsters, demons and satanic goddesses, fetishes and gothic landscapes. Giger is one of the main representatives of Fantasy Art and is considered as one of the most important artists on the modern scene and is immediately associated with his most famous creation, the monster star of the film Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979).

The San Sebastian Horror and Fantasy Festival screens both features and shorts, classics and children's films, and has a special section devoted to the best works of science fiction produced in Spain. It presents exhibitions of dolls and models and it has a section devoted to "Comic Book Encounters" which in 2009 featured an exhibition of the work of Juan Giménez, the fantasy and science fiction cartoonist and winner of numerous international awards: Best Cartoonist by the readers of Comix Internacional; Best Cartoonist in the Barcelona Comic and Illustration Fair; Yellow Kid award by the Lucca International Comic Fair; his work was exhibited in the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris in 1997.

Prizes are given out in the following categories: Audience Award for Best Short Film and Best Feature Film, International Jury Prize for Best Short Film, The Golden Méliès for Best European Fantastic Short Film, The Youth Jury Prize for Best Short Film.
