In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of a new visual culture. Characters are making their mark across every conceivable field and context, whether as digital icons, arabesque paintings, fine art sculptures or commercial campaigns. Since 1999, Pictoplasma has been defining the shape, velocity and structure of the phenomenon, with publications distributed worldwide, exhibitions, performances and conferences throughout Europe and the Americas. With the annual Animation Festival Pictoplasma puts the style back into animation, distinct from the patterns and styles of the established industry.

The best international character-driven animations, shorts, motion graphics and music visuals are presented in curated cinema programs, with focussed selections such as characters in rhythm, narration or motion, special presentations, artist talks and lectures. This offers visitors the unique possibility to learn about the artists’ motivations, allowing private, inspiring insight into their methods. Among others, previous presentations

included the acclaimed studios Passion Pictures, Shynola and Studio aka, and style-setting designers such as Friends With You, Fons Schiedon or François Chalet.
