One World is the largest and most important human rights film festival in Europe and is firmly established as one of premier cultural and media events in the Czech Republic. One World presents films from all around the globe and seeks to promote the best quality documentary filmmaking on social and political issues.
One World was awarded UNESCO special mention for its contribution to human rights and peace education. After being held in Prague the eleventh One World festival traveled to 29 towns and cities throughout the Czech Republic. In addition, a selection of One World films was presented in Brussels and in Washington DC as part of the Czech Presidency cultural program. A part of the One World Festival includes the awarding of the thus far only international human rights award Homo Homini.
The program of the festival not only includes the highest quality documentary films that were completed in the previous year and received awards at prestigious international festivals, but also investigative and activist films which draw attention to the most serious problems and violations of human rights.
One World is a meaningful discussion forum. This year in Prague there will take place over 50 discussions of various foreign-political, human-rights, civil society and ecological themes. Another 60-70 discussions will take place in the 16 regional centers.
One World is an education platform. The screening of this year’s festival will be visited by about 6,000 pupils and students of the primary and secondary schools in Prague and approximately 14,000 in the regions. After each film screening there will follow a debate. Participation in the One World Festival offers young people a more diverse perception of the world, places news in a wider context, breaks down prejudices and teaches students to articulate their own opinions in an open discussion.
