Queer films have the power to remind us of who we are, to inform and transform people both in and outside of our communities, to bring people together to celebrate queer culture and to advance the movement for equal rights. Out Takes Lesbian and Gay Film Festival New Zealand's annual queer film festival - Out Takes - has been celebrating gay and lesbian cinema for the past thirteen years, organized by Reel Queer, Inc.

The festival's first expansion outside Wellington was to Christchurch in 1997, followed by Auckland in 1998. The festival went to Dunedin from 2001 to 2003.

Film Selection:

Reel Queer’s programmers in Wellington preview over 400 films and video each year. They scour overseas festival programs, make personal contact with filmmakers and distributors we know and call for submissions through our web site and various mailing lists.

The programming sub-committee is made up of gay men and lesbians; all with long standing interest in cinema or involvement in film festivals.

Festival programmers look for films that have good production values, have queer themes and characters and that are available for reasonable rental fees. They try to ensure that the festival has a balance overall of genres (feature films, documentaries, shorts) and of lesbian, gay, transgender and other-themed films to reflect the diversity of our own queer community.
