Melbourne Queer Film Festival (MQFF) is the largest queer film festival in Australia, the second largest film festival in Victoria, and one of the oldest queer film festivals in the world. MQFF screen the best queer film from Australia and around the globe with a mission to become one of the top queer screen events internationally. The Festival first screened in 1991 and has continued every year since.
Each year the Festival screens over 120 features, shorts, documentaries and experimental films from Australia and all around the world over 12 days. The Festival is Australia's largest queer film festival and screens at 3 premier Melbourne venues including the state of the art Australian Centre for the Moving Image to audiences of over 20,000.
Films and videos can be of any length and should be of interest to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered communities.
AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARDS
Audience Choice Awards For Best Feature Film- All feature films in the Festival are eligible. The winning film receives $5000 cash, co-presented by MQFF and Volkswagen.
Audience Choice Award For Best Documentary- All documentaries of 45 minutes and over (including Special Presentations) are eligible. This award is co-sponsored by the Festival and MQFF Life Member David McCarthy. The winning film will receive $2000.
Audience Choice Award For Best Short Film- All short narrative films screened in the Festival are eligible. The winning film will receive $500 cash.
Audience Choice Award For Best Australian Short Film- All Australian short narrative films screened in the Festival (except those screening in Celluloid Casserole) are eligible. The winner will receive $1000 in cash co-presented by MQFF and Karen Russell of Step Right Up.
JURY AWARDS
The City of Melbourne Emerging Filmmaker Award for Best Australian Short Queer Film- The City of Melbourne has confirmed their long-standing support of the Festival by generously providing a $2000 cash prize for this award.
Selectors’ Choice Award for Best Australian Short Queer Film- The winner receive the award and $500 cash.
