The MEDIAWAVE Int'l Film and Music Festival has become well known in Hungary and abroad as a film contest, judged by an international jury, that honors quality films from around the world. The open competition excludes mass-produced "blockbusters.” In addition to the film competition, there are also retrospective screenings, film premiers, film workshops and a robust slate of musical performances.
During the history of the festival almost every important Eastern European film makers visited MEDIAWAVE - like Iljenko, Klimov, Menzel, Bukovski, Kossakovsky, Vivi Dragan Vasile and Emir Kusturica who also debuted as a musician. Maia Morgenstern, who became world famous during the time, took part in the festival two times with her special plays. The festival is distinctive because of its special location. The event is a kind of borderline and also a meeting point of the western and eastern film culture. With hard work it has managed to restore the importance and the rank of Eastern European film and has established itself as an intensely "visual-minded” festival.
In the first festival’s program almost all branches of contemporary art had a place (concert, theatre, dance-theatre, street theatre, exhibition, literature). This all-inclusive attitude changed over time and step-by-step the festival selected the genres that were to get more emphasis. Since 2002 MEDIAWAVE has had the subtitle "International Film and Music Festival" that expresses the acceptance of music as a main festival genre with improvisative, jazz, ethno and underground sub-genres playing a central role. Since 2004 MEDIAWAVE's very successful workshops in those music sub-genres have come to life as a continuing feature of the festival.
