  • Festival Description:

The Los Angeles Film Festival, held annually for ten days in June, showcases the best of American and International cinema. With an attendance of over 60,000, the festival screens over 200 narrative features, documentaries, shorts, and music videos. Since its founding year in 1995, the festival has continued to grow into a world-class event, uniting new filmmakers with critics, scholars, film masters, and the movie-loving public.

Films submitted to the Festival are reviewed by our programming department, which evaluates each film, looking for the best in new American and International cinema. Select narrative features, documentary features, and short films participate in the Festival’s three competitive sections, the winners of which are chosen by special juries. In the Short Film Competition, awards are given for Best Animated or Experimental Short, Best Documentary Short, and Best Narrative Short.  All features and shorts are eligible for Audience Awards, which are chosen based on ballots submitted by Festival audiences and are presented in the following categories: Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, International Feature, Short Film, and Music Video. The Los Angeles Film Festival is a qualifying festival in all categories for the Independent Spirit Awards and is also a qualifying festival for the Narrative and Animated Short Film categories of the Academy Awards®.

The Los Angeles Film Festival has screened an impressive slate of international and independent films included Wong Kar Wai's 2046, Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers, Lodge Kerrigan's Keane, Gus Van Sant's Last Days, Miranda July's Me and You and Everyone We Know, Rodrigo Garcia's Nine Lives, and Sally Potter's Yes. In recent years, the Festival has also presented the World or American debuts of Fahrenheit 9/11, Mayor of the Sunset Strip, Kissing Jessica Stein, George Washington, and I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, among many others.
