  • Festival Description:

The International Short Film Festival Leuven (ISFFL) presents a wide selection of high quality short films, short live-action as well as short animated films, short documentaries, short experimental films and music videos. Flemish and European short film competitions are central to the festival's role as a film talent scout. About half of the festival's program consists of Flemish short films, the other half of foreign – mainly European – shorts. The ISFFL also presents a series of retrospective programs and specials every year. International Short Film Festival Leuven welcomes many foreign guests (directors, distributors, sales agents and festival organizers) to each edition of the festival. Since 2004, school screenings (during the festival as well as throughout the year) have become a part of the festival's work.

International Short Film Festival Leuven European Short Film Competition presents two awards: a Jury Award (2.500 euro) and an Audience Award (1.500 euro) and each year "Selected Shorts", the short film dvd label of the ISFFL, releases several short film compilations. In May 2010, the 10th Selected Shorts-edition included: the Best Flemish Shorts of 2009, a selection of the very best recent Flemish short films. The tracklist contains Siemiany (in competition @ Clermont-Ferrand 2010), Venus vs. Me (winner @ Berlinale 2010), A Gentle Creature (winner Jury Award @ ISFFL '09) and many more. Non-profit organisation Fonk is the organisation behind the International Short Film Festival Leuven and also runs an arthouse cinema, Cinema ZED, and organizes the International Documentary Film Festival DOCVILLE.

Leuven is a city of about 100.000 people, 20 kilometers from Brussels. It is widely known for two things: it harbors one of the oldest universities in Europe. The K.U.Leuven was founded in 1425 and has more than 25.000 students today. Leuven is also the hometown of INBEV, the largest brewery in the world, famous for it's beer Stella Artois (since 1366), one of the best known (and many would add: best tasting) beers in the world.
