  • Festival Description:

The INDEPENDENT FILMFEST OF OSNABRÜCK provides a panel for committed filmmaking. The basic idea of the FILMFEST is to forward tolerance within the society and between nations. Such tolerance can only be developed by knowing, understanding and dealing with one's own as well as "foreign" points of views and ways of life.

The pivotal sections of the FILMFEST are "Beware of Peace!", "Children's Rights Issues" and the "International Short Film Program". In order to give them more public attention we offer three cash awards. An external expert committee, a school children's jury and an audience jury bestow the Peace Film Award, the Children's Rights Award and the Award for the best short film. In the future the FILMFEST will focus on the acceding countries to the EU from Eastern Europe in a section labelled "East Meets West". Against the tense backdrop of the EU enlargement, filmmaking can act as a mediator by raising the problem of the irritating strangeness of our Eastern neighbors and initiating and stimulating a constructive discussion. The program is accompanied by subject-related collections of films and special events.

Its selection of films and their deeper connection is what sets the FILMFEST apart from other similar events. The FILMFEST not only presents committed filmmaking, but also adds a didactic component to the presentation that's relevant to the medium. Each program is introduced by a presenter. The FILMFEST invites directors and qualified experts to give further information on subject matters, backgrounds and esthetic considerations or to take part in discussions after the screenings or in workshop talks. We also offer special screenings for school classes and are closely collaborating with local teachers. They are provided with informative literature for didactic preparation in order to be able to install the cinematic medium as part of an extracurricular education.
