  • Festival Description:

Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is North America's largest documentary festival. Each year, the festival presents a selection of more than 100 cutting-edge documentaries from Canada and around the globe. Through its industry programs, the Festival also provides a full range of professional development, market and networking opportunities for documentary professionals.

Hot Docs was founded in 1993 by the Canadian Independent Film Caucus, a national association of independent documentary filmmakers. In 1996, Hot Docs became a separately incorporated organization with a mandate to showcase and support the work of Canadian and international documentary filmmakers and to promote excellence in documentary production.

With its lively mix of public and professional events, Hot Docs is the ideal North American market and meeting place for the documentary industry. Last year, the festival attracted over 1800 delegates, including documentary filmmakers, buyers, programmers, distributors and commissioning editors from around the world.

During the Festival, Hot Docs also presents the renowned Toronto Documentary Forum (TDF). Launched in 2000, this limited-seating event is focused around 30 pre-selected project-presentations and quickly established itself as North America's essential international market event for buyers and sellers working in the social, cultural and political documentary genres. More than 130 broadcasters and distributors from Europe, Australia, the USA, Canada and elsewhere regularly participate and the TDF has proved highly successful for the projects presented, as well as the rest of the delegates. Because of its unusual format, it's also a preeminent source of up-to-the-second market intelligence for both buyers and sellers. The TDF has evolved from a format developed by Amsterdam's FORUM for the international co-financing of documentaries and their partner, the European Documentary Network (EDN).

Hot Docs screens Documentary films and videos of all lengths and subject matters for inclusion in the following programs: Canadian Spectrum, International Spectrum, World Showcase, National Spotlight, Made In... and Doc It!.

All films in official competitions will be receiving their first Toronto showing, with many screenings being world, international, North American or Canadian premieres. For most screenings, directors will be attendance to introduce their films and to participate in post-show Q & A sessions with the audience.

  • In addition to the awards announced at the Hot Docs Awards Presentation on Friday, April 25, the Hot Docs Audience Award and the CIDA Award were named at the close of the Festival.

TAKING ROOT: THE VISION OF WANGARI MAATHAI (Director: Lisa Merton, Alan Dater; USA), the inspiring story of the Nobel laureate whose simple act of planting trees inspired Kenya’s environmental movement, protected the human rights of its people and defended the nation’s democracy, won the Hot Docs Audience Award. Sponsored by History Television, the award is decided by audience ballot.

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Prize for best Canadian documentary on international development was awarded to SHOCK WAVES (Director: Pierre Mignault, Hélène Magny) for its courageous portrayal of a country and its people. The documentary shows the powerful impact that community-based radio has in affecting significant change throughout the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The CIDA Jury commended the filmmakers for sharing the risks taken by the Radio Okapi journalists on the ground and for bringing a fresh perspective to this under-reported story. The CIDA Award comes with a $5000 cash prize.

The 2008 Hot Docs top 10, as determined by audience ballot, are:

    1. TAKING ROOT: THE VISION OF WANGARI MAATHAI (Director: Lisa Merton, Alan Dater; USA)
    2. PLANET B-BOY (Director: Benson Lee; USA)
