  • Festival Description:

The Independent Short Film and Video Awards (ifva), hosted annually by the Hong Kong Arts Centre, has been actively promoting innovative creative media since 1995.

With the track record of past years, ifva has proven to be a force for creativity, which
    stands for:

    iNNOVATIVE, fRESH, vIBRANT and aDVENTUROUS:
and under the context of the audio-visual media embracing: idea, frame, vision and audio

The Mission of ifva is to discover and nurture the next currents for local creative industry of moving images, to encourage creativity, aesthetics and innovative use of medium and too encourage cross-fertilization of creativity, knowledge and experience on media creation among different regions in Asia

ifva was established to encourage a creative use of media and use it as a tool for dialogue and expression while not repeating the existing forms (be it the concept, narrative or production mode) for moving images - these were the beliefs that launched ifva, and these are beliefs that ifva iscommitted to promote and spread.

Stepping into the 13th year, ifva has focused on the discovery and cultivation of new
generations of film / video makers and progressing interactions among creative media talents in the Asian regions.

In addition to supporting short film, video, and interactive media, ifva also organizes pre- and post-award activities to enhance public awareness of creative media and encourage media interaction. Committed to developing local and Asian indie talent, ifva seeks to break new ground and push the boundaries of innovation and creativity.

Ifva is a six month long event that can be divided into two stages.  The first stage consists of workshops, community tour, seminar and the call for entry, while the  second stage in an organized event that includes the competition, screenings, work exhibition.

More than a magic lantern, more than a lighthouse, ifva has been doing a lot in the recent years to support sustainable development of creative media in the region. The most encouraging fact is that the ifva brings the winners and their works to Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, the world’s largest and most significant platform of its kind indeed. Also the “Single-channel Interactive Media” category will accept proposals other than finished work. The ifva strives to open up possibilities of creative media by networking and building a specific platform for creative minds. Let's blow up your creative power!

  • Hurray, creative talents! More than 20 local and Asian directors have just received prizes from the 13th Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards (ifva) and are prepared to radiate their creative energies in the
    city and around the world.

The ifva is the most active promoter of creative media in Hong Kong and Asia.

From this year’s ifva award-winning works, one can see the diversity of styles and possibilities of “Moving the Images.” “Merry X’mas” by the Open Category Gold award winner AU Man-kit Jevons, as the jury Elaine Chow said, “is genuine and rather touching” showing the ordeal of poverty on a little girl. “A very direct way of letting viewers feel the problems of the blind and the response they elicit” as commented by the jury Chan Pik-yu.

“Voice in the Darkness” by Lee Ka-wai and Lau Chui-ting, Gold award winners of the Youth Category, brings the audience to the darkness through lens.

Leong Suet-yan Cherry reveals her great potential in joining the rapid-growing local animation field with her Gold-awarded work “The Hole” using paper-cutting techniques with a “delightful surprise” (commented by the jury Lo Che-ying Neco).

Isfansyah Ifa from Indonesia impresses the jury of the Asian New Force Category with his highly stylized work “Half Teaspoon.”

Suwichakornpong Anocha from Thailand plays around with the real and the fabricated real with respects to the ontology of filmmaking in his work “Jai.”
