Known as a showcase for the contemporary work of established and emerging filmmakers, respected for its curated series such as “Why War?” as well as for its continued exhibition of classic documentaries, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival has been on the cutting edge of documentary programming since its founding in 1997. Full Frame is a four-day, morning-to-midnight smorgasbord of films, panel discussions, seminars, Q & A sessions and southern hospitality. It is among the premiere documentary film festivals in the world.
Set within a single city block of historic downtown Durham, North Carolina the intimate festival landscape fosters community and conversation between filmmakers, film professionals and the general public. During the past decade the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival has welcomed both first time and celebrated filmmakers including Martin Scorsese, Frederick Wiseman, Abbas Kiarostami, Michael Moore, Errol Morris, D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus, Barbara Kopple, Ken Burns, Charles Burnett, Mira Nair and Jonathan Demme.
Full Frame was founded by Nancy Buirski who had come to Durham in 1996 after being awarded a DeWitt Wallace Fellowship in Media and Journalism at Duke University. Buirski launched the first festival in 1997 under the aegis of the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke. In 2002 she formed an independent entity that later became Doc Arts Inc., establishing the festival as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Nancy Buirski led the festival until 2007. She is currently a film producer, curator and advisor to media companies.
The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival enjoys strong support from industry leaders like HBO and A&E, maintains a close association with the Center for Documentary Studies, with its local community and with its presenting sponsor, Duke University.
