  • Festival Description:

Since 1987, FilmFest DC has featured some of the best, new and exciting films in international cinema today. The film program is comprised of narrative feature and shorts and documentaries that encompass a global range of cultures, music, and politics from over 30 countries. Each year there are changing sidebar programs (including a country of focus) and retrospectives.

Filmfest DC features films that local audiences might never otherwise see and appreciate. One of the primary roles of the film festival is to constantly explore and discover, to take audiences down roads they didn't even know existed. To ask questions, challenge assumptions and provide unique experiences.  With this mission in mind, Filmfest DC has included a new section added in 2007, Views from the News, which presents films placing us behind today's headlines and giving us human perspectives into major events. Other sections include: The Global Rhythms music-on-film series (which is always lively and vibrant) and World View which programs a selection of new work by some of the world's best filmmakers.

    Awards include:

The Capital Focus Award is a juried competition of selected films deserving of increased recognition. Films in the competition are selected by the Festival's programming staff and the winner will be determined by a jury of accomplished film professionals.

The Circle Audience Award was founded by Ted and Jim Pedas and sets the standard for innovative quality film programming. Filmfest DC will present an award to the feature film voted the most popular by our audience.

Each year, Filmfest DC organizes the Directors' Roundtable where a group of international filmmakers converge for screenings of their films and interaction with each other and our audiences. Audience and filmmakers are encouraged to join the festival's guest directors for an informal discussion of their working styles and the contrasting conditions under which their films are made.
