During the 36 years of its history the Alcalá de Henares / Comunidad de Madrid film festival (ALCINE) has confirmed its prestige and has turned into one of Spain's most important short film competitions.
Beside the short film, the festival has since its very beginning helped to place the Spanish cinema at the margin of commerciality - be it because of its content, its political and social character or because of its new challenges and aesthetic and creative risks. Since 1987 has been presented on the Pantalla Abierta /Open Screen section - a section exclusively dedicated to feature film debuts of new directors. With a competitive character and a public award, the Pantalla Abierta / Open Screen section satisfies the hunger of an (predominantly young) audience for new challenges. It has turned into a section with great success concerning attendance and feedback.
Another noteworthy aspect of Alcine are the international sections that - since their beginning in 1983 - present short and animated films from all over the world as well as retrospectives of directors and cineastes that are renowned in those fields.
Furthermore, the Alcalá de Henares / Comunidad de Madrid Film Festival has tried to open a path for reflection upon the topics teaching cinema and visual education in Spain and about the process of cinema in general. Past workshops have included topics sch as: 'Cinema, Video and the new technologies and their importance for teaching,' 'Introduction to the cinematographic language,' 'Spain's cinematographic production,' and 'Special Effects' amongst many others.
