  • Festival Description:

Dragon*Con is America's largest, multi-media, popular arts convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film. The festival focuses each year on showcasing the finest independent short films of the fantastic. Aside from Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror films, Dragon*Con screens film of the imagination that steps out of the slice-of-life category. That includes short animated films of all types.

The Dragon*Con Independent Film Festival is a four day event of film screenings and panels, with directors, producers, writers, actors, SFX & makeup artists all sharing their expertise. The Festival competition is for short films (under 60 minutes). A few independent features are shown (out of competition).

The Dragon*Con Short Film Festival has been around as long as the multi-media Dragon*Con convention itself. Both began in 1987. In the early years, the festival was just a minor extra event focusing on films that would interest a Sci-Fi fan. Over time, the Festival has became larger and more important to Dragon*Con. It has also departed from its fan-film roots. The 2009 Festival included 4 feature screenings: the quirky vampire story The Death of Alice Blue, the animated post-apocalyptic Hellscape From Inside, the zombie comedy George's Intervention, and the partly animated documentary Mythic Journeys. It also presented 19 panels, including a complete seminar on the fundamentals of digital filmmaking.
