The Courmayeur Noir In Festival, a meeting of cinema, books tv and comics, is recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Association (FIAPF). It screens the best of cinema and literature in the field of thriller, mystery, spy story, horror and noir s.f. in one of the most fascinating ski resorts in the Italian Alps, Courmayeur, an hour drive from Geneva and Turin and 2 hours from Milan. The films in competition are all premières of the year and are screened by a prestigious Jury and awarded the Mystery Award for Best Film and the Napapijri Prize for the Best Performance. The Festival also features a documentary section, retrospectives exploring the history of the genre, discovering cult authors, setting new trends, as well as a TV Noir section and a festival for young audience, MINI Noir. The Festival also promotes the meeting with the best Italian and the International crime-novel writers, and gives the prestigious Raymond Chandler Award to the career of a master and the Giorgio Scerbanenco Award to the best Italian published crime-novel. Conferences and seminars investigate the genre's artistic developments and its close links with reality. Events, exhibitions and publications further enrich the appointment with Courmayeur Noir in Festival: not to be missed by all fans and professionals of the genre.
The program at Courmayeur Noir In Festival is divided into:
- OFFICIAL SELECTION - the main section of the festival that presents both films in competition and out of competition. It includes 35mm (and 16mm if necessary) films of very recent production primarily aimed at theatrical distribution, and belonging to the mystery genres. These films are all Italian premiers. Films which have already been presented in other festivals abroad can be selected for the competition as long as they have not won official awards in specific festivals similar in kind to the Courmayeur Noir in Festival.
- DOC NOIR – A high quality selection of the latest documentaries dealing with the noir world in terms of subject, style or themes profile. These films are either 35mm prints or Beta SP Pal videos.
- MINI NOIR – A select choice of films dedicated to young audiences, featuring mystery, adventure and fantasy plots suitable for younger viewers.
- RETROSPECTIVE – Films not necessarily of recent production. The section is articulated in several program
An international jury will award the following awards to the films that have entered the Official Competition Section: a) Black Lion for Best Film; b) Special Mystery Award for the Best Actor/Actress; c) Optional Special Citation Award (at the Jury's discretion); d) Audience Award for Best Film.
NOIR IN FESTIVAL participants have included: Quentin Tarantino with Reservoir Dogs, Gary Oldman (Fallen Angels), Danny Boyle with Shallow Grave, Kevin Spacey with Albino Alligator. Charlize Theron, Paul Verhoeven, and Sigourney Weaver. Other directors that have competed for the Black Lion Awards in Courmayeur include: Tim Burton, Lucas Belvaux, Luc Besson, John Dahl, Claire Denis, Eric Rochant, Mike Figgis, James B. Harris, Neil Jordan, James Merendino, Mark Peploe, Bob Rafelson, Nicolas Roeg, Carlos Saura, Ron Shelton, Steven Soderberg, Johnnie To, and Robert M. Young.
