  • Festival Description:

Originally created as a showcase of Italian animation, Cartoon Club has grown over the years to include international work by amateurs and world-renowned professional animators. In recent years, the public has been able to enjoy screenings of animation films and exhibitions that include comic strip partners, Japanese mangas and much more. Debates, meetings, theatre shows and concerts, dedicated to comics and cartoons have animated summer evenings in different parts of Rimini and have proved extremely popular. Short videos and ads of the festival are available on the Cartoon Club channel on YouTube.

In 2001 a program of animated films produced by primary and secondary schools was presented before being circulated throughout Europe. In recent years, Cartoon Club has organized theme exhibitions that proved very successful and focused on the relationship between comic art and subjects such as sport, faith, disability and great comic strip partners. And alongside comics are cartoon heroes from over the world. Over the years, Cartoon Club has established a network of contacts with authors and international animation experiences worldwide. Some of the most important Italian artists have come to Rimini: Leo Ortolani (Rat-Man), Matitaccia (illustrator for Autosprint), Silver (Lupo Alberto), Corrado Mastantuono (Disney and Bonelli), Carlos Gomez (Dago), Alfredo Castelli and Giancarlo Alessandrini (Martin Mystère), etc. Special issues with famous comic characters in new adventures set in Rimini have been published by Cartoon Club, with characters such as Diabolik, Dampyr, Rigel,Jonathan Steele and many others.

Since 1997 Cartoon Club has presented two awards; one for animated film school students ("Premio Signor Rossi") and one for essays on comics or cartoons ("Premio Franco Fossati"). In 2002 another award was added to the Festival: the “Faith in Strips” award, dedicated to comics written on religious themes. From 2009 to 2011, three new awards have been created: the “Cartoon Kids Award”, for films addressed to children; the “Cartoon Junior Award”, for film made by children in school workshops; and the "Cartoon Club Award", for film made by professionals and production houses.
