The Carrousel International du Film de Rimouski (CIFR) is the oldest around for North American youth and is one of the most influential events for children and teenagers in Canada. The Festival’s target audience is children and teenagers ranking from 4 to 17 years of age as well as for any film enthusiast.
In late September Rimouski becomes a real film-magnet, a place where directors, international jury members, programmers, buyers and you, the public, meet to discover the best of youth cinema from all over the world and to participate in the many activities at Carrousel International Festival du Film. The Carrousel gives youths the chance to become familiar with the world of cinema while developing their critical sense.
In September 1983 André Mélançon, director, and Danyèle Patenaude, screen writer came to organize a cinematographic workshop on animation. The Festival was thus created, and the Camério Award was created in 1987. In 1994, the CIFR started working at the international level with International festivals, such as Cannes Junior, calling upon their expertise. In 1995, films created in the CIFR’s workshops were presented in Tokyo during the World Organization for Preschool Education’s General Assembly. The educational mission of the CIFR really began to take shape in 1999 with an educational tool kit designed for children in primary and secondary schools, a first in Québec.
