  • Festival Description:

The emphasis of the Braunschweig International Film Festival lies on contemporary European productions. First screenings, international highlights, retrospectives, and portraits will give the audience and the press ample scope for new discoveries on five screens. There are three main programs that include:

    European Competition - Der Heinrich:

Young, European, and of a high standard: these are the qualities rewarded by the Heinrich Prize, the audience prize which was first awarded in 1999. This award of € 10,000, kindly donated by the Volkswagen Bank, is for first and second works of young European directors. The money is equally divided between the director and the distributor or producer to support distribution in Germany.

    Music and Film:

The Braunschweig International Film Festival is the only German film festival which draws attention every year to the close relationship between film and music, thus devoting itself to a long neglected aspect of cinema history and culture. Portraits of film composers, a music master class and silent films with musical accompaniment with new compositions will be presented. Music and Film is a series combining pleasure both for eye and ear which is sure to please both film and music fans. In 2006, internationally acclaimed composer Carl Davis will be the festival’s guest of honour.

The Short Film Music Prize - Der Leo:

Since 2003 the Leo is being awarded for the best combination of image and sound in a short film. Based on a jury decision, the prize of € 2,000 will be rewarded equally to the director and the composer.

Further Features include: New International Cinema, New German Films, Focus on a Country, Homage to a renowned European actor/actress, Short Films and Midnight Talks.
