The Amakula Kampala International Film Festival is an annual 10-day free event in Kampala. Since it started in 2004 it has become increasingly known on a national, regional and international level and can celebrate being the largest cultural event of its kind in the country.
In 10 days of screenings including roughly 200 films, - features, shorts, fiction, documentary, animation, experimental, classics and contemporary- are shown from around the world. A special focus is on African cinema, while the Eastern Africa Region is presented in special Focus Programs.
The festival invites filmmakers to introduce their work, participate in discussions and discuss the practice and theory of filmmaking in seminars. A film training workshop is offered in advance of the festival.
The Golden Impala Award will be offered to the best Eastern-Africa short film, which will be selected by an international jury.
The annual East African Film Congress brings together film professionals from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda over three days to compare notes and discuss the development of the film industry in the region with regard to production, training, distribution, exhibition and government and private sector support to the film industry.
The festival commissions special projects from the cultural community to interact with film through dance, music, spoken word, and visual arts to emphasize the importance of collaboration, local resources as well as personal or local stories for the making of film.
The festival sets out to reach a wide audience by bringing festival films for free, translated into Luganda (the most commonly spoken local language), this is in the video halls of the local communities. Film programs and workshops are specifically designed for children and youth.
